Weligama (Weligama, «Sand Village") Nestled in a large picturesque bay, the beauty of which can be estimated at sunset, going on its eastern part. There is also the headquarters of the surfers who appreciate local waves. In the opposite side, to the west, the opposite is true - the water is quiet, calm and azure pure sapphire.

The bay is 30 km from Galle, surrounded by red and pink cliffs that can be seen from the sea for tens of kilometers.

Getting to Weligama

Before Weligama can be reached by bus from Galle (15 LKR, the way 1 hour) and Matara (LKR 19, 30 minutes). In addition, the town is on the w / d line Colombo - Matara, so here you can comfortably reach by train: the capital (2nd / 3rd grade 136/73 LKR, in a way 4 hours), Halle (2- nd / 3 rd grade 29/16 LKR, the way 1 hour) and Matara (2nd / 3rd grade 40/18 LKR, on the road 30 minutes).

Entertainment, excursions and attractions Weligama

Weligama - very pretty town, on the street where you can find and old colonial mansions (decorated with unique wooden ornaments), and Buddhist Dagobah, and Catholic cathedrals. The most famous attraction of the city - carved from blocks of three-meter figure of the God of Death (Leper King).

Near the village is Yala Rock - rocky terrain with rubble stones 15 meters or more. In addition, there is an interesting cave inhabited by a variety of fish and turtles.

Almost in the middle of the beach, in immediate proximity to the coast, is the island of Taprobane (Taprobane). At the time, I stayed here the famous novelist Paul Frederic Bowles (here his novel "House of the Spider" from his pen). Now open a hotel on the island.

Where to stay: in Tangalle, which is famous for its marvelous sandy coast; surfers - or in Weligama Hikkaduwa (the latter, by the way, and enjoy divers); in Unawatuna, which according to the Discovery Channel is included in the "top ten" best beaches in the world. Koggala interesting for its lake, which stretches along the beach line for many kilometers. What to see: one of the oldest cities of the island of Ceylon Anuradhapura, "Lion's Rock 'Sigiriya, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, cave monasteries Dambulla, Dutch fort of the 17th century in Galle, a city-museum of Polonnaruwa, and the mountain resort of Nuwara Eliya, also often referred to as "little England".
