Anuradhapura - is the administrative center of the North Central Province of Sri Lanka and one of the oldest cities of the island of Ceylon. For a long time Anaradhapura located in a strategic location - at the intersection of the two port areas - and nestled deep in the jungle, it was the capital of the state - until 1017, when the city was severely destroyed by invaders from South India and left the residents.

For almost a thousand years the city was in ruins, and only in the 19th century English hunter accidentally ran into him in the jungle.

Today Anuradhapura mostly restored and divided into two parts: the Old Town, which is a residential area of ​​security, and the New Town, where the entire population lives Anuradhapura (about 50 000) and is a tourist area with hotels, restaurants and shops.

Getting there

Anuradhapura is located 200 kilometers from a small island capital - Colombo. To get to town, you can train (there are two w / station), as well as a bus for 5 hours (it comes to the bus station in the New Town) or rental car on the highway A9 4 hours.
